Change of musicians
Over the course of this project I've had to change the people in which i collaborated with. At the beginning the plan was to work with two other musicians. Jaymie Porter (Bass) and Rhys Battle (Drums) having my self playing the guitar. However there were two main issues that had rose the prevented me from doing so. The first was the lack of motivation these musicians had to practice which led to them not being able to play to the standard I wished them too. Although the drummer did have knowledge on how to drum I found that he was just not willing to dedicate him self the way I would of wanted him too. This came apparent to me during rehearsal sessions where he had repeatedly failed to of learned his parts. The situation with the bassist was much worse as he just did not know how to play bass. Although that is what he considered to be his main instrument it was apparent that he was not committed nor efficient in his instrument of choice. Not only was it a problem he did have the technical ability he also did not take criticism well and failed to reflect and improve on him self. Which although done poorly the drummer did have the ability to do. The second problem that arose was the change of genre. This was mostly for the drummer as by this point I had already kicked the bassist off the project due to his lack of ability to communicate and just generally do what was asked of him. With the change of genre to the EP also came challenges for the drummer. As the drummer plays mostly rock and punk music he found it difficult to adapt his style to the more funk/soul style. Luckily the band was very easily replaceable. For starters the drummer was then replaced by Nathaniel Ruben. Nathaniel is a fairly established. He is regularly doing session work for established music as well as drumming for his church every weekend. His level of skill and understanding of his instrument and the genre came in great use when writing music and overall just gave the track recorded a much more alive feeling that would of not been obtained through using Rhys Battle. The bassist was also replaced by one of my teachers at college Ali Smyth. It was extremely lucky that Ali had agreed to play bass on my EP as he is extremely experienced and talented on the bass guitar. His deep and thorough understanding of funk and soul came in great use in song writing as he also aided me in certain sections when it came to writing my own guitar parts. With the change of genre I also felt it was appropriate to recruit a vocalist. I asked Lucia Tillson to do vocals over the EP during a writing session where we had actually written the first track of the EP "True Colours". Her voice greatly suits the tone of the music although I do wish I had more of an input in the writing of the lyrics as in the end I did find them to be a little cliche.
